The number of people experiencing homelessness in Waterloo Region is unprecedented. In December 2022, a new emergency shelter opened on Frederick Street in Kitchener with 45 overnight beds for men.

The new shelter is operated by Services and Housing In the Province (SHIP), in partnership with the YW and the Region of Waterloo. SHIP is a new partner in Waterloo Region, but has 30 years experience providing housing services elsewhere in Ontario.

At this new shelter, people can count on having a bed for 30 days or longer. This gives them a consistent place to stay or store belongings. There are also caseworkers available during daytime hours to help clients find stable, permanent housing.

The Region of Waterloo works with service providers like SHIP to help people find and keep a home where they feel comfortable, safe, and a part of their community.
