Region purchases important land for potential GO Station site and affordable housing
The Region of Waterloo purchased a strategic parcel of land in Breslau in June, unlocking an opportunity for a potential future GO Station site and new mixed-use development including affordable housing.
The land is located along Fountain Street, next to the recently upgraded rail line, making it a perfect spot for new, transit-oriented, affordable housing and neighbourhoods amenities. A future potential GO Station site in this Woolwich Township community would also provide new transit options to get travellers to and from the nearby Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF).
“The Region is committed to a sustainable, intentional future. We are doing this through major community building projects that will encourage further development by private partners, organizations and community members,” said Karen Redman, Regional Chair. “We’re looking forward to working alongside our colleagues in Woolwich, our local MP and MPP, other levels of government, as well as Metrolinx, to bring this emerging neighbourhood and important transit infrastructure to life.”
Currently there is one GO train station in the Region, at Weber and Victoria in Kitchener.
A future GO station site was always identified as a need for Waterloo Region, and this milestone purchase right along the rail line is an exciting first action. Additional GO service in Waterloo Region would give residents and visitors more sustainable and accessible options when travelling into Toronto, or anywhere across the GO train network, for work or play.
This land purchase highlights the Region’s commitment to plan for good growth as we grow to one million residents. This land will enable us to create the kind of neighbourhoods people need – affordable places to live, integrated with good, sustainable transportation.
