Reimagined Doon Heritage Village moving towards reopening

Doon Heritage Village is evolving — and you’re invited to be part of it! Visitors will be able to experience new stories at the historical village later this year. Museum staff are preparing to pilot new interactive exhibits, workshops and programs.

We are preparing for a full public reopening in summer 2026.

In the meantime, students have been able to learn and play again at Doon Heritage Village. The Region’s museum team reopened six village buildings for school trips this spring. We will also be hosting the Waterloo-Wellington Children’s Groundwater Festival in May 2025.

The village is also still open for booked programs, special events and rentals.

Since its temporary closure in 2023, Doon Heritage Village has been updated to improve accessibility, modernize utilities and support year-round programming. While this important infrastructure work was underway, the Region of Waterloo Museums and Archives team has been working with the community to shape the next chapter of Doon Heritage Village. Together, we are expanding the stories we tell, making room for the histories and traditions of people whose experiences have not yet been fully reflected at the site.

Since 1957, generations have explored our 60-acre living history village to experience life in rural Waterloo Region in 1914. Museum staff will continue to engage community members, historians, and cultural leaders to ensure more voices and perspectives are shared through a new Interpretive Plan.

Join us on this journey to tell the stories that have shaped Waterloo Region. Follow the Doon Heritage Village project page for the latest information.
