Region of Waterloo Arts Funding helps local artists create and connect
Art can inspire curiosity and build connections. The Region of Waterloo Arts Funding program is helping create an exciting, creative arts scene by supporting local artists, arts groups, and organizations.
Currently, the Region’s program is run in partnership with local arts organization MT Space. The program provides $265,000 each year for various artistic projects throughout this community.
Supporting local artists helps enhance our local culture. And that benefits all people in Waterloo Region.
“The Region of Waterloo is committed to fostering local arts and culture by providing funding that encourages creativity,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “This support helps a wide range of projects flourish throughout Waterloo Region.”
Grants can be up to $10,000 for each project. These funds help support all types of creative people and their art. The program also prioritizes marginalized voices. It uses a jury process to ensure representation from Black, Indigenous, racialized, and newcomer artists.
Alvin Witcher is a filmmaker from Cambridge. His short film “Coffee Conversations” is set in Cambridge. The film explores the chance connection between a Deaf woman and a hearing man in a local coffee shop.
Regional funding is helping this art reach a broader audience, Witcher said.
“The Region of Waterloo Arts Funding supports my work and helps connect Deaf and disability communities with the wider public,” he explained.
Local filmmaker Denise Bodán also feels the funding supports her creative journey. Bodán is part of the team that created a comedy series called “The Ropes.” The show tells the story of a working-class family who builds a wrestling ring in their Kitchener backyard.
“The Region of Waterloo Arts Funding greatly impacted me and my project. It allowed me to receive support to create meaningful work and show that Waterloo is not just where I’m from, but also a place where my creativity can thrive.”
Since 2002, the Region of Waterloo Arts Funding program has helped local artists and arts organizations with their creative projects. The support promotes inclusivity and brings our community together, strengthening the region’s culture and identity.
