Region highlights up-and-coming artists in partnership with UW

Art possesses a unique ability to spark curiosity and cultivate connection. To support local emerging artists, the Region of Waterloo has partnered with the University of Waterloo (UW) Fine Arts department. The program puts artworks created from the Fine Arts graduating class on exhibit all year in Regional buildings for the public to experience.

This annual partnership started in 2008. After a short break during the pandemic, the program restarted in 2024 to again showcase the work of talented new artists in the Waterloo Region.

This year, the program has a new venue: the Region of Waterloo Library’s Ayr branch. All the artworks are now displayed on the rural library’s dedicated art exhibit wall.

The art was selected earlier this year by a jury of Public Art Advisory Committee. Funding artists’ work is an important part of the program – each artist is receiving $450 for the loan of their work. The program also supports these artists with professional development and an opportunity to enhance their career.

Among the chosen artworks are two pieces, “Freefall” and “Plummet,” created by Echo Vettoretto, a graduate of the UW Fine Arts program. Vettoretto dedicated months to perfecting both artworks, made of tufted acrylic yarn. The pieces were inspired by themes of human connection, Vettoretto said: “I wanted to express the feeling of having someone who is with you throughout life’s struggles and help guide your way through the chaos.”

The chance to gain a new audience for their work was a delightful prospect, Vettoretto added.
“I think the partnership is a great opportunity for new artists to gain experience within the world of art as well as get their names out there. Having my artwork displayed at the Region of Waterloo Ayr library branch is honestly amazing. I didn’t think I would have my art on display outside of the University of Waterloo so soon. It’s very exciting to have my art up within the Region of Waterloo.”

The UW Fine Arts exhibit is currently on display at the Region of Waterloo Library Ayr branch until April 2025.
