New Sunflower Program helps reduce barriers in our community
In June 2026, the Region of Waterloo joined the Sunflower Program – an internationally recognized initiative that supports people with hidden disabilities in accessing public services.
What is the Sunflower Program?
By wearing the sunflower symbol (either on a lanyard or bracelet) residents can easily and discretely share that they have a hidden disability. This lets service providers know the client may need extra time, support or understanding during an interaction.
Different Region of Waterloo services are joining the program in phases, starting with regional museums, libraries and the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF).
Why is this important?
An estimated 25 percent of Waterloo Region residents have a disability, many of which are hidden or invisible.
Some non-visible disabilities and chronic illnesses include ADHD, Autism, Crohn’s Disease, Epilepsy, and Ostomy. These are just a few examples of the many conditions the Sunflower symbol helps identify.
“Joining Sunflower Program is an important step in building a more accessible and inclusive Waterloo Region,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “By participating in this program, we are raising awareness, reducing barriers, and ensuring that everyone in our community can access services with dignity and confidence.”
Membership in the program includes training to support staff to help them deliver inclusive, supportive services for residents with hidden disabilities.
Joining a global movement
The Region has now joined organizations across the country and the world who are using the Sunflower Program, including Toronto’s Pearson Airport.
“We are delighted to welcome the Region of Waterloo to the Sunflower,” said Clare Kumar, Regional Director, Canada for the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. “By joining the program, the Region is demonstrating its commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible community. We look forward to supporting regional services as they introduce the Sunflower across their organization.”
Other Ontario municipalities have joined too.
Locally, the City of Waterloo is participating and has Sunflower lanyards available for pickup at a variety of locations including the Waterloo Service Centre, City Hall, the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, RIM Park, Albert McCormick Community Centre, and all Waterloo Public Library branches.
