New art contest celebrates the Grand River

Artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to celebrate the Grand River and win prizes in a new contest called “Grand Inspirations.” Share your own piece of art, or just have a look through all the different creativity submitted so far!

The community art contest was organized alongside the current exhibit at McDougall Cottage, called Currents of Change – Inspiring Action Along the Grand River.

In past years, McDougall Cottage has held a “Paint the Grand” event which invited artists to set up along the river and create pieces for a gallery auction. This year’s contest opens the door for all sorts of artists to participate.

The “Grand Inspirations” contest is open to photographers, poets, painters, dancers, musicians, video artists and more. All creative ways to express what the Grand River mean to you are welcome!

Art can be submitted online here until October 11. Then, winners will be determined through community voting from October 12 to 31. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in three age categories:

  • Ages 11 years and under
  • Ages 12 to 17 years
  • 18 years and up

“McDougall Cottage is thrilled to host this revamped community art contest as part of our exhibit celebrating the Grand River,” said Michelle Bartlett, Head of Content and Experience for McDougall Cottage. “We’re looking forward to seeing the diverse interpretations and artistic responses from our community and look forward to showcasing their works.”

Some of the prizes available:

  • Bowling passes from Bingemans
  • Tickets to African Lion Safari
  • An overnight stay at Hilton Hotel
  • Theatre tickets from Drayton Theatre
  • Gift cards to a local art supply store

For additional information and to participate, please visit the contest page or contact McDougall Cottage at 519-624-8250.

This contest is also receiving support from the FRIENDS of Waterloo Region Museums, a volunteer foundation dedicated to the preservation of Waterloo Region’s history and cultures.

McDougall Cottage is one of four experiential sites operated by Region of Waterloo Museums & Archives.  The other three are Doon Heritage Village, Schneider Haus, and the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum. Together, they tell stories from this region through educational and public programming, events, and over 60,000 artefacts.
