E-scooters… where can you ride them in Waterloo Region?1 min read
Reading Time: < 1 minuteDid you know? Effective July 1, 2022, there are new rules for e-scooters in the Region of Waterloo and the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. E-scooters are now allowed on:
- All roads 50 km/hr or less
- All roads with bike lanes, regardless of speed limit
- On all boulevard multi-use paths. E.g., paved trails next to roads like Homer Watson Blvd.
- Select paved recreation multi-use trails. E.g., Iron Horse Trail, Spur Line Trail, etc.
Helmets are mandatory for all e-scooter riders, regardless of age. As well, fold your e-scooter before boarding a bus or train. Note that only folding scooters are allowed on Grand River Transit vehicles.
E-scooters should not be ridden on the sidewalk. Please yield to pedestrians. When approaching from behind, e-scooter riders should ring a bell or horn, then pass carefully.

The Region and the Cities of Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo are working now to finalize an agreement with a company to provide a bike and e-scooter sharing program across the three cities. Watch for more news about the new program later in 2023!
