Celebrating the winners of our Circular Economy Month colouring contest!
Congratulations to the talented winners of the Region of Waterloo’s fall colouring contest, held in celebration of Circular Economy Month! This event showcased amazing creativity from across the community, promoting sustainability and inspiring waste diversion.
What is Circular Economy Month, and Why is it Important?
Circular Economy Month, celebrated every October, raises awareness about the circular economy — a sustainable model that prioritizes reducing, reusing, and recycling materials to minimize waste. Unlike a traditional “take-make-dispose” system, the circular economy keeps resources in use for as long as possible, reducing the need for new materials and lowering waste levels. This approach is crucial, as our community’s landfill only has about 20-25 years of space left. Through recycling, repurposing, and green-binning, we can extend the landfill’s lifespan and reduce our impact on the environment.
By learning about the circular economy, residents become more aware of how their choices impact the environment, and contests like this one help spread these important values in a fun, engaging way!
Encouraging Waste Reduction Through Our Waste Whiz App
In addition to the fun, the contest encouraged more residents to download the Waste Whiz app, a valuable tool for staying informed about curbside collection programs and getting waste reduction tips. If you haven’t yet, download the Waste Whiz here. It helps you understand which waste items go where, so you can keep making sustainable choices.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the latest colour contest — you’ve truly brightened our circular economy efforts!
