Carlsberg Canada toasts a win for water efficiency
Carlsberg Canada has something new to raise a glass to. And this time, it’s not beer. The company’s Kitchener production facility has earned the Region of Waterloo’s Water Efficiency Excellence Award for making major upgrades that significantly reduced its water use.
The award was presented at Regional Council on October 22, where Regional Chair Karen Redman praised the brewery for leading the way.
“We commend Carlsberg on their efforts to reduce their water consumption,” said Chair Redman. “When large volume water users take steps to reduce their water use, it benefits the whole community and serves as a great example of how these investments lead to wins for everyone.”
Working with the Region’s WET (Water Efficient Technology) Program, Carlsberg installed new sub-meters throughout its facility last year. Those meters helped the team track exactly where water was being used and where it could be saved. The result? A reduction of about 100,000 cubic metres of water in just one year. For context, that’s enough to supply over 450 homes for twelve months.
The Region’s WET Program helps businesses with funding and support to cut down on water use.
Our community has a finite source of fresh drinking water, and water treatment infrastructure is expensive. That’s why using water efficiently matters as Waterloo Region continues to grow. It’s a win-win – saving water is good for our community and good for the environment!
