Black And Free art exhibition returns to Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum

The Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum is pleased to once again host the Black And Free exhibition. This vibrant and thought-provoking collection of work opens November 2, 2024.

The exhibition features a mix of emerging and established Black artists from Ontario, each commissioned to create new pieces that explore powerful themes of blackness and freedom.

You’ll see work from talented artists like Lillian Allen, Sydné Barnes-Wright, Ken Daley, Alana Decker, Beck Deresse, Damola Disu, Aljumaine Gayle, Janine Ilya, Naila Keleta-Mae, Raechele Lovell, Miss Coco Murray, Simone Patricia, and Àbíkẹ́ The Artist. Each artist’s work tells a unique story that explores multifaceted experiences and expressions of blackness and freedom through historic and contemporary lenses.

Art has always been a powerful tool for expressing the struggles and triumphs of Black communities. Throughout history, visual art, music, literature, and performance have been vital in imagining and advocating for freedom. Black And Free celebrates this rich tradition, showcasing how creativity and expression can shape our understanding of identity and liberation.

Black And Free was launched in 2017 by Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae, an artist and associate professor at University of Waterloo. As project lead and exhibit curator, she is passionate about bringing together artists, academics, students, and the public.

“The artists featured in this exhibition have created a range of works in video, painting, sound, multimedia, and digital art that invite audiences to reflect on a range of themes,” says Dr. Keleta-Mae. “That’s what makes art powerful, it can inspire us to think, dream, and act in new ways.”

Black And Free will be at the Ken Seiling Waterloo Regional Museum from November 2, 2024 until February 1, 2025. Mark your calendars and don’t miss out on this unique experience!
