Popular GRT bus wrap returns for Black History Month
During this year’s Black History Month, keep your eyes open for a GRT bus that features special artwork.
The unique bus wrap was created by Wilfrid Laurier University student Vanessa Nkansah-Okoree. The artwork is called “Black Excellence: Past, Present and Future” and recognizes the invaluable roles Black individuals have played in shaping Canada’s identity.
“Being called on to make this artwork was very overwhelming, but in a good way,” said Nkansah-Okoree at a Regional committee meeting this month. “Growing up, there hasn’t been a bus with characters on it that look like me. There haven’t been cartoons with characters that look like me.
“When you see people that look like you, it’s not just about representation. It’s about being included in the story.
“I want to challenge the narrow, stereotypical portrayals of Black people and instead celebrate the depth of our identities. Ultimately, what I’m trying to convey is that strength comes from unity, but that unity doesn’t mean uniformity. By embracing our differences and recognizing the importance of diverse representation, we can create a more inclusive, empowered community,” added Nkansah-Okoree.

The bus will cover different Grand River Transit routes throughout February to commemorate Black History Month. A similar bus wrap was also featured during Black History Month last year.
“I’m proud every time I see it. Our history is something to be celebrated. Seeing yourself, your culture and identity reflected in the community is so important, especially for the younger generation,” said Regional Councillor Colleen James.
Black History Month is a time to celebrate, honour and acknowledge the diverse contributions of African, Black and Caribbean Canadians to our community. It provides an opportunity to celebrate culture, while also reflecting on the ongoing impact of systemic racism.
