Region receives $2.9M to support new homes with important water infrastructure
Funding has arrived to help add more homes for people to live in Waterloo Region. The Region has received $2.9 million from the provincial government to build a new well house in Cambridge. This will provide important drinking water capacity so the community can grow.
This funding from the province’s new Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund was announced Sept. 23. Municipalities can use this money from this fund to build, repair, rehabilitate and expand critical drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to support growth.
This well house will pump water out of the ground, treat the water, and then pump it into the community for residents and businesses to use. By investing in this new facility, the Region will increase our drinking water supply. This enables us to build the new homes we need.
“The Region of Waterloo is building the critical infrastructure needed for growth in every corner of our community,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “It’s not just about building new homes, it’s about ensuring they can be serviced and connect to essential water and wastewater infrastructure.”
According to the Regional Official Plan, 121,000 new housing units are expected to be built in Waterloo Region between 2021-2051.
Construction of the new well house is scheduled to start in 2025.
